Health Promotion Term Paper

Nursing Exercise

The health promotion model was initially created by Nola J. Pender and her concept was to be a matching complement to other models of health protection. The model helps define ways to increase health through living in a complete healthy atmosphere that is also disease free. The goal is to help individuals live more in harmony with themselves. This model tells the many aspects of a person's nature through his or her interactions with all aspects of the environment. This particular case will focus on following three areas for the client: his individual characteristics and life experiences, his behavior-specific cognitions and their affect, and his behavioral outcomes. His personal factors are:

Mr. MT's biological background is that he is a 61-year-old African-American male. He is not currently overweight but has a history of working in a job that is sedentary. He has a history of hypertension and has been diagnosed Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH). There is family history associated to cancer on the male side of his family. He has minor vision concerns that have been corrected with glasses

His personal psychological factors such as self-esteem and self-motivation have been greatly affected by the fact that he has just received a devastating diagnosis, his associated family history and the fact that he is currently unemployed.

His personal socio-cultural factors are that he is a black American who grew up in an atmosphere that was not conducive to personal health management or social acceptance and he worked in menial positions for many years but is now unemployed. He may already have been suffering from Depression prior to the diagnosis because of the fact of his employment status and community standing.
In order to induce health promoting behavior, the nursing team must address immediate problems and provide viable solutions that can be carried out by the client. The potential solutions must result in promoting logical behaviors that can improve his health, enhance his overall functional abilities while also offering valid options for dealing with his current health status and his current personal stage of development. It is critical that we do not negatively influence Mr. MT with competing demand or preferences that could inadvertently disrupt his other health promoting actions.

There are four areas that need to be addressed through this process:

1. His medical diagnoses of Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH). Factors that influence this issue are that his father died at age 49 from BPH and one of his three brothers died at 52 from colon cancer.

2. As mentioned, depression is a major concern for 61-year-old black male and with all of the immediate issues he will be facing, it is critical that depression is addressed prior to any serious repercussions.

3. Because of the new diagnosis, it is critical that he continues to deal with his past medical history -- 20 years of hypertension being managed with atonal. Side effects could become an issue

4. Age is an issue because of the need to pay for treatment may be a serious concern for Mr. MT because he is currently unemployed and is too young for Social Security benefits. He may be eligible for Social Security Disability insurance but he would have…
